Weekly Words of Wisdom

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense."

Weekly Words of Wisdom

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Davis Productivity Award

Here is a picture of me and my colleages Peter Hsu (to the left of me) and Anthony Chaumont (to the right of me) being honored with a Davis Productivity Award this week. We were awarded based on an innovative highway lighting level data collection system that I had pioneered while working at the Center for Urban Transportation Research at the University of South Florida. The work was then completed by another researcher and utilized to save the State of Florida over a million dollars in data collection costs.

Weekly Words of Wisdom

I had a habit several years ago of passing on to the staff who worked with me an inspiring quote every week (I have loved collecting inspiring quotes from great people for many years). I had been compiling them in a collection that I was going to publish "one of these days." I am going to resurect that effort, so tune in weekly here for Weekly Words of Wisdom.

I had six honest serving men
—they taught me all I knew:
Their names were Where and What and When
—and Why and How and Who.

- Rudyard Kipling

Jesus T-shirt now part of "hate crimes" debate

WND has a story that says that people wearing a T-shirt that says "Jesus is the standard" on the front are being denied access to federal buildings including the Supreme Court. This kind of egregious violation of the first amendment is the kind of thing we can expect much more of if the "hate crimes" bill currently in the Senate becomes law. Click here to read the story.

Parental Rights

A parent’s right to raise their children as they see fit is a time-honored American tradition, but today it is being threatened. A growing body of international law fuels activist judges to legislate foreign standards from the American bench, while treaties such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child would subject parental decisions to government oversight and international review.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (MI-2) has proposed HJR-42, the Parental Rights Amendment, to stop the erosion of parental rights in American courts while simultaneously defending our laws from international invasion. Please, visit parentalrights.org to learn more about the Amendment, and to join their email network by signing the petition to protect parental rights.
