Weekly Words of Wisdom

This time of year, many folks are setting goals for the coming year. So here are a few encouraging words of wisdom about setting and achieving your goals in the coming new year. - LH

"My philosophy of life is that if we make up our minds what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose..." ~Ronald Reagan

"Once you've established the goals you want and the price you're willing to pay, you can ignore the minor hurts, the opponent's pressure, and the temporary setbacks." ~ Vince Lombardi

"Let me tell you the secret that has led me to my goal: my strength lies solely in my tenacity." ~ Louis Pasteur

"It is when things go hardest, when life becomes most trying, that there is greatest need for having a fixed goal." ~ B.C. Forbes

"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal." ~ Henry Ford

"Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal." ~Vince Lombardi

Wear the Pants

I saw this posted on Doug's blog, and have to agree...It is suprising that Dockers would say something so politically incorrect, even though it is correct. It shows once again that whether they like it or not, even those who would mock the Bible and what it says end up realizing it is truth.

The Mysterious Islands

Last week, I had the privilege of being in Tampa for the premier of The Mysterious Islands. This is a great movie that gives glory to God as the Creator of all things. The movie chronicles a journey by a team of creation scientists and explorers to the Galapagos Islands to see the things that Charles Darwin saw. Their conclusion, in stark contrast to Mr. Darwin's, is that these islands are a testimony of the wisdom and handiwork of a glorious Creator. I highly recommend this movie for all families. Weekly Words of Wisdom

I continue to dedicate Weekly Words of Wisdom to my father. He taught me many things but chief among them was to think and to laugh. I don't think he ever did anything by accident, he always had thought it through. However, he always seemed to enjoy doing whatever it was. So again, this weeks' words of wisdom are dedicated to my dad:

"Think like a man of action, act like a man of thought."

Weekly Words of Wisdom

This week's weekly words of wisdom are from my father, R. Ronald Hagen who passed away yesterday afternoon. In so many ways that he will never know, he has inspired me and motivated me and helped me to become what I am. I remember as a boy him telling me I am like a bumblebee – ‘I’m not smart enough to know it can’t be done.’” He even had artwork produced that had a bumblebee on it with this phrase around it that he kept in his office.

The basis for this phrase is that because, according to all that is known about flight, bumblebees should not be able to fly. Based on the amount of lift that is calculated to be developed by their wings, versus their weight which is holding them down, they should never be able to get off the ground. But despite what the scientists say, the bumblebee still flies. I have thought about this a lot over the course of my life when someone tells me that something can’t be done. In some cases they may be right, but in many cases they are limiting themselves by their attitudes and paradigms.

The Four Ds of Decision Making:
  1. Don't - if it is the responsibility of others, let them do it.
  2. Delay - if it should be done at a better time, wait.
  3. Delegate - if others can do it better, let them.
  4. Do It - if none of the above apply, do it!

Provacative thought for the day...

Regarding the issue of abortion, why is it that if the Mars Explorer were to discover a single-celled amoeba on Mars all of the media and the scientific elites would be boldly proclaiming the discovery of life on Mars? Yet here on earth, a living multi-celled "fetus" (which if left alone would mature into a person), by these same people, is not considered life? The fact that it has a heartbeat and measureable brain wave activity are inconsequential to these people. How can you justify killing this living thing? Think about it...

Weekly Words of Wisdom

I thought that this quote was particularly appropriate as Americans are now beginning to wake up to the fact that the nation of the people, by the people, and for the people is being threatened by those among us who would rather let the government take care of them than do anything for themselves; those who would rather have security than liberty; those who would trade their birthright for a mess of porridge.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. ~Samuel Adams

Do we have a “right” to health care?

Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. has a very thoughtful and insightful answer to this question:

Yes, and no. How we answer depends a great deal on what we mean by “right.” The key difference in this issue, as with most issues is this. A right can be that which sound ethics requires that no one take away from me. Our forefathers, for instance, argued that we have an inalienable right to keep and bear arms. It would be wrong for the state, or my neighbor, to take from me any of my guns. Or, on the other hand, too often a right is understood as that which others have an obligation to provide for me. Taking the second amendment here, I doubt anyone would argue that my right to keep and bear arms means that the state has the right to tax you in order to pay for me to have a gun. Politically speaking, in other words, rights rightly understood are more about what the state may not do to restrain me than they are about what the state must provide me.

Do I, for instance, have a right to high speed internet access? A cell phone? I hope we can all agree that the state would be wrong to forbid me to have these things. In that sense these things are within my rights. On the other hand, I hope we haven’t yet sunk so deeply into an entitlement mindset that any of you would suggest that the state has an obligation to provide any of these things for me. I do have high speed internet of a sort. I have satellite, which is slow and unwieldy, but purportedly better than dial-up. No other option reaches this far into the sticks where I live and work. I also have a cell phone, the kind you get for free when you sign up for service. I don’t have an iphone because I can’t afford one. Is it right that some people should have iphones, while I have to actually push real buttons on my phone? Is it right that some people can download fresh information from E-bay faster than me, and so can beat me in auctions? Of course it’s right and fair.

Health care, though, that’s not a luxury is it? Aren’t we all due the basic necessities? No, we’re not. Where, I wonder, would one find in the Bible, or in the Constitution, anything that suggests that the state has the right to tax my neighbor in order to provide health care for me? Or more basic still, food for me? Why then are we debating this at all? Every member of Congress, and the President of these United States, swears an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Every professing Christian recognizes the Bible as our alone ultimate authority. So again, why the debate?

Because when we want something and can’t afford it, we’re quite content to ask the government to tax others to pay for it. How many heroes of capitalism at sundry Town Hall meetings, waiving the flags of our fathers, receive checks from the government? How many of them are already on socialized health care with Medicaid? How many supported President Bush who gave us socialized pills for old folks? How many received help from the feds on their mortgage, or in sending their children to college? How many of them avail themselves of socialized education, the government school system? No, this debate isn’t about freedom versus tyranny. It is instead about one group of socialists dickering with another group of socialists about who will receive what piece of the pie that was wrongly stolen from others. All because we’re so wrong about rights.

Light a candle...

I was reading this morning an old Chinese proverb; "better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness." Too often, we Christians stand around cursing the darkness that surrounds us rather than lighting a candle and bringing light to the situation. The Bible tells us to "let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven" (Matt 5:16). So where ever you are, shine some light today. This world of darkness needs it, and it will bring glory to God.

Health Care Reform

It doesn't really matter to me if you call it "health care reform" or "health insurance reform," my position is that Congress has no authority to mess with it. You can check out the letter that I sent to my congressman here.

People like me are getting fed up with the government trying to intrude more and more into our lives. Our precious liberties are being stripped away, not by invading hoards, but by our elected whores. Our so-called leaders are leading us down the path to socialism - the path to total servitude and serfdom. I will not go down that path.

For those of you government snitches who want to turn me in to the White House list of dissenters, just make sure you spell the name right: Larry Hagen.

Weekly Words of Wisdom

After spending some time vacationing with my kids and my wife the past two weeks, this quote seemed very appropriate:

"Every now and then go away, have a little relaxation, for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer, since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgment. Go some distance away, because then the work appears smaller, and more of it can be taken in at a glance, and lack of harmony and proportion is more readily seen."

The Victor

If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don't.
If you like to win but think you can't,
It's almost a cinch you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a fellow's will.
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you are outclassed, you are.
You've got to think high to rise.
You've got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win the prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the stronger or faster man.
But sooner or later, the man who wins
Is the man who thinks he can.

Get (and Keep) the Government Out of Healthcare

For a great story on why we need to get the government out of healthcare as it is now, click here.

For some great information on why we do NOT want socialized government-run healthcare, check out the e-mail that my representative, Jack Kingston, sent to me. Most notable and personally relevant to me is that prostate cancer mortality is over 600% higher in Great Britain than in the US. Since my father-in-law is now diagnosed with prostate cancer, I shutter to think what that would mean if we went to a health care system like Great Britain.

Parental Rights

A parent’s right to raise their children as they see fit is a time-honored American tradition, but today it is being threatened. A growing body of international law fuels activist judges to legislate foreign standards from the American bench, while treaties such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child would subject parental decisions to government oversight and international review.

Rep. Pete Hoekstra (MI-2) has proposed HJR-42, the Parental Rights Amendment, to stop the erosion of parental rights in American courts while simultaneously defending our laws from international invasion. Please, visit parentalrights.org to learn more about the Amendment, and to join their email network by signing the petition to protect parental rights.

Dirt Roads - by Paul Harvey

My older brother Rob sent this to me:

What's mainly wrong with society today is that too many Dirt Roads have been paved.
There's not a problem in America today, crime, drugs, education, divorce, delinquency that wouldn't be remedied, if we just had more Dirt Roads, because Dirt Roads give character.
People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride. That it can jar you right down to your teeth sometimes, but it's worth it, if at the end is home ... a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog.
We wouldn't have near the trouble with our educational system if our kids got their exercise walking a Dirt Road with other kids, from whom they learn how to get along.
There was less crime in our streets before they were paved. Criminals didn't walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they knew they'd be welcomed by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun. And, there were no drive by shootings. Our values were better when our roads were worse!

People didn't worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous, they didn't tailgate by riding the bumper or the guy in front would choke you with dust and bust your windshield with rocks. Dirt roads brought patience.

Dirt Roads were environmentally friendly; you didn't hop in your car for a quart of milk, you walked to the barn for your milk. For your mail, you walked to the mailbox.

What if it rained and the Dirt Road got washed out? That was the best part, then you stayed home and had some family time, roasted marshmallows and popped popcorn and pony rode on Daddy's shoulders and learned how to make prettier quilts than anybody.

At the end of Dirt Roads, you soon learned that bad words tasted like soap. Most paved roads lead to trouble, Dirt Roads more likely lead to a fishing creek or a swimming hole.
At the end of a Dirt Road, the only time we even locked our car was in August, because if we didn't some neighbor would fill it with too much zucchini.
At the end of a Dirt Road, there was always extra springtime income, from when city dudes would get stuck, you'd have to hitch up a team and pull them out.
Usually you got a dollar ... always you got a new friend ... at the end of a Dirt Road!

Christian Classics

Last week, one of the elders in our assembly spoke about Martin Luther's courageous stand for the Gospel which helped usher in the protestant reformation. That inspired me to listen to what Luther said in that great oration.
I had ordered this 9-CD set called "Classics of the Christian Faith" several months ago. We had decided to do Bunyan's classic "Pilgrim's Progress" together as a family, and decided to listen along as Max McLean narrated while we followed along in the book. The set also contained Luther's "Here I Stand" defense that he made at the Diet at Worms when called upon to renounce his numerous writings critical of the direction that the Roman Catholic church was moving in at the time.
Also included in the set is Jonathan Edward's "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," St. Augustine's "Conversion," and George Whitefield's "The Method of Grace." All of these are narrated by Max McLean, who narrates the Bible if you click the little speaker icon next to the "Verse of the Day" on this or the Hagen Homestead blog.

Witherspoon School of Law and Public Policy

I recently received a copy of the 2008 Witherspoon School of Law and Public Policy CD set. Whether you are an aspiring lawyer or just desire to be a better-informed citizen, this CD set will help you to view the legal issues that are current today through a biblical worldview. Doug Phillips kicked it off with a tremendous message, "Introduction to the Christian Foundations of Western Law." Former Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, the Honorable Roy Moore, gives an inspiring message on "Christianity and the Courts," that includes much information on his court battles over the ten commandments in his courtroom and the Alabama courthouse. Jordan Lorence also gives an excellent presentation on "The Battle for Biblical Marriage." Larry Pratt gives an excellent overview of the Second Amendment and the 2008 US Supreme Court ruling that affirmed that as an individual right. Don Hart gives an often-frightening look at the current state of affairs with regard to parental rights in the US and looks particularly at the Texas polygamy case of 2008. This CD set contains much, much, more and features approximately 20 hours of live conference audio. You will certainly learn a lot listening to this set. Click here for more information and to order the set.

Believing God

I am now reading a great new book by Dr. R.C. Sproul Jr. entitled "Believing God." His thesis is that one of the problems that many Christians have is that although they do believe in God, they don't believe God. He points out how we believe in God but do not expect Him to really answer prayer, and are often surprised when He does.

I suppose that we do all have a little bit of doubting Thomas in us. I was reminded of that particular encounter this morning and pondered how we do all seem to be like that; "I am not going to believe until I put my hand in his side and touch his nail-scarred hands." The Italian painter Caravaggio painted a picture entitled "The Incredulity of St. Thomas" in which he tried to capture that moment. To see the painting, click here.

The Lord calls us to walk a faith walk; to trust and obey. It really does help relieve some of our day-to-day pressures if we will simply do that. Also, if we really want to see God work, we MUST have faith. We need to be like the guy in Mark 9:24 who said, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"

If you follow US politics at all, you know that the Obama administration has presented a budget proposal for the next year that would require 9.3 trillion dollars (that is $9,300,000,000,000) in new debt. That means that the budget is 9.3 trillion out of balance: meaning that we are spending 9.3 trillion more that we are taking in. That works out to $68,000 in new debt PER HOUSEHOLD in America. However, this is none too suprising in that the current administration seems to want to take over every aspect of the American economy.

What is really shocking and disappointing to me is that the house republicans claim to have a bill that is claimed to be "responsible" by not only the republicans in Congress, but by the likes of the Heritage Foundation, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Read the Heritage Foundation summary here. The republican alternative is touted as responsible because it ONLY adds 5.7 trillion dollars in new debt ($41,700 per household). How about NO additional debt? Has anyone ever heard of maybe just reducing spending? When families all across the nation are faced with financial crises, they have to cut their budgets. It is disappointing that even so-called "conservatives" have now signed on to add record levels of additional debt. These conservatives are not conservative at all, they are just less liberal than the extreme liberals that have taken over the democratic party.

This debt is like toxic waste in our economic system. Yes it is better to add only 5.7 tons of toxic waste into our drinking water rather than 9.3 tons, but again, how about adding NO MORE toxic waste into our already polluted system?

German Homeschoolers Seeking Asylum in US

A homeschooling family that faced severe persecution in Germany has now relocated to the US and is seeking political asylum here. The frightening language from the German government indicates that they consider children to be property of the state. It is some very shocking stuff from a modern western culture. Read WND's story here.

Emergency Relief Area

This is a sign that was in a presentation I saw this week by the Michigan DOT where they were talking about the roadway resurfacing project that they were working on in the picture. I thought that this was kind of interesting that they created a place for you to relieve yourself in case of emergency...

Hate Crime Laws in Canada

If you would like a glimpse of what may be in our future if some of the so-called "hate crimes" bills that have been proposed would pass, we need look no farther than our neighbors to the North. Canada has passed very strict and liberal "hate crimes" laws that are being used to attempt to silence Christians throughout Canada. Consider this e-mail message that I received this morning:

Rev. Stephen Boissoin was hauled before Alberta's human rights commission over a complaint from a teacher with a Messianic complex. This teacher accused Rev. Boissoin of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation over a letter criticising homosexuality that was published in the Red Deer Advocate.

The human rights commission found Rev. Boissoin guilty of discrimination and hate. The adjudicator has banned Rev. Boissoin from preaching the Gospel. This militantly state-ist ruling is one of the most aggressive attempts yet in Canada to stamp out public Christianity.
Alberta's provincial government intervened in the case on the side of the commission and the complainant, against Rev. Boissoin.

The "human rights" commissioner also ordered Rev. Boissoin to issue a - false, if necessary - apology for his written comments. He was also ordered to pay money to the complainant for hurt feelings even though the complainant was supposedly fighting on behalf of homosexuals, not for himself.

Rev. Stephen Boissoin fears God and has refused to comply with this "human rights" decision. Instead, he has appealed the decision into Alberta's court system.

We Christians in the US need to see that we don't end up with this type of tyranny of thought; that we are continually able to speak the TRUTH of God's Word, whether it is politically correct or not. We must be vigilant in defense of our Constitutional freedom of speech.

Living the God Life

Yesterday, I was sharing in church how we all need to have our lives lived in such a way that anyone looking in from the outside sees a real Christian (i.e. they see Christ in us). I talked about how when they open up the pages of our checkbooks and our calendars, they ought to see a Christian life and worldview. Our lives need to reflect the reality of the presence of Christ in our lives. Here is another reminder of how to live your lives for the Glory of God:

Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."

Since you call on a Father who judges each man's work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

A Great New Family Movie!

My good friend Manny Edwards has let me know about a movie that is now out that will be a great blessing and encouragement to you and your family. For more information, to view a trailer, or to order the movie, click here.

Reason #43,684 to home school your kids...

I was talking last night with a dear brother who was sharing something that happened to a good friend of his in the Valdosta, Georgia area. His friend's middle school-aged daughter came home from school and said that at school that day they had to practice putting condoms on cucumbers. Her father is a pastor at a local church and was a bit miffed that this type of thing would be the topic of instruction at the school. He went to the school to talk to the teacher, but the teacher said that they (the teachers) do not have to answer to the parents, and that they are taught and trained not to respond or reply to the parents. So the public schools want you to give them your kids and allow them to teach your kids what ever they want with no questions allowed from the parents. Public schools are a dangerous place, and any Christian parent that allows their children to be subjected to that type of anti-Christian indoctrination is making a huge mistake. The schools are actively engaged in evangelizing children in the agenda of the anti-God atheists and homosexuals. They promote lifestyles and an agenda that is hostile to living a Christian life. Putting your kids in public schools is putting your kids in the hands of Satan. While there are several school teachers I know that are good Christian people, the overall agenda of the public school education system is to teach and promote an anti-family type of lifestyle that is in opposition to the Word of God.

For yet more reasons not to put your kids in public schools, go rent or buy the video documentary "Expelled" by Ben Stein. This video documents how academic dishonesty rules in the science classroom, and how the academic intelligentsia wants to teach neo-Darwinistic evolution despite the fact that numerous credentialed scientists are beginning to show the holes in that theory. The power of the tongue...

The Bible is full of verses that talk about the power of the tongue. Nothing that we know existed until the LORD spoke it into existance - the LORD said "let there be..." and there was. You can speak blessings or curses over people, and those words have tremendous power to bring about blessings or curses. Make it a point to speak blessings to people where ever you go today! Click here to see a few verses out of Proverbs where the power of the tongue is discussed.
